BIOGRAPHY

Bill has been fascinated by photography since he was 12 years old. While in college, he realized it might be possible to make a living at his hobby. He’s been fortunate enough to have been a professional photographer for more than 40 years now, specializing at being a generalist.

"After college and four years in the U.S Air Force, I began my working life as a photojournalist in 1960 spending six months driving round-trip from London to Calcutta, via Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, India, Kashmire, Sikkim and Afghanistan doing stories for publications which included the NY Times and the National Geographic Magazine., interviewing and photographing among others the Shah of Iran, Nehru, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, the Dali Lama and the Maharaja of Sikkim.

"From 1963 to 1966, I spent three years with the U.S. Information Agency covering the perimeter of the 'Bamboo Curtain' from Korea through the Philipines and S.E. Asia to Viet Nam, Laos, and Thailand. On returning to the U.S., I worked seven years as Director of Photography for the audio-visual division at the publishing firm of Harcourt Brace in New York, and then established my own studio in Greenwich, Connecticut. "Hubbell Photography" specialized in free-lance photography, with emphasis on corporate communications and annual reports.

“Subsequently I settled down with my family and transitioned into the second part of my career: the corporate/industrial realm, focusing primarily on corporate portraits, food, architecture, annual reports, and studio assignments.

“After 20 years of business assignments, I lept at the opportunity to work on photographic books based primarily on the land and people of New England. This "third phase" work is now my primary focus. I’ve basically come full circle, returning to photojournalism and travel photography that has always been my joy.”
Bill has been a member of the American Society of Media Photographers since 1975.

"In 1989 my first retail market 'coffee table' picture book CONNECTICUT, now out of print after nine editions, was published. NEW ENGLAND COAST, published three years later was joined in June, 2001 by SEASONS OF MAINE, followed by SAFE HARBOR: Exploring Maine's Sheltered Bays, Coves & Anchorages, and GOOD FENCES: A Pictorial History of New England Stone Walls, which was released in September, 2006."

REFERENCES

"Bill is an excellent and highly creative photographer. He brings to his craft a combination of patience, know-how, state-of-the-art equipment, thorough preparedness and a dedication to excellence. He is an insatiable experimenter, always looking for a more exciting way to answer an assignment. His solutions are invariably in concert with the needs of the client, adding a spark of excitement."

George Arthur, Design Director, Consumer Reports Magazine

"Bill's real talent is in the the mood he evokes, the atmosphere of spontaneity and life that masks the careful thought and intricate planning he puts into creating great photographs. Above all, his willingness - no, insistance - on pushing harder, going the extra distance, makes working with him become an accomplishment, and even more, a source of pride."

Rob Lipsky, Senior Art Director, BBDO - Promotion

"Our clients never fail to comment on Bill's ability to work with them in difficult situations and on his quick grasp of their products and services. From the rigors of the production line to the refinements of the corporate office, Bill's personality and skills ensure the professionalism our clients demand."

Allan Buttrick, Design Director, Communication Corp., Stamford, CT

"Bill won't focus the lens until he's got the purpose and audience of the shoot's end product in focus. That process of articulation makes for the very best kind of collaboration -- more time- and cost-efficient, more creative and much more fun."

Carol L. Cheney, Cheney & Co. New Haven, CT
